The Stadium of Light hosted a first and last during the decade - James Milner’s first Premier League goal and Alan Shearer’s last. There were top flight debuts for Hull City and Wigan Athletic but final top flight appearances for Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth.
Cristiano Ronaldo arrived from Portugal, won the Ballon d’Or and then left for a world record fee. Chelsea were bought by Roman Abramovich and welcomed another man from Portugal - the Special One. The UEFA Cup became the Europa League - with both Middlesbrough and Fulham reaching the final during the decade - whilst both Manchester United and Arsenal enjoyed the continuity of having the same manager for the 10-year period.
